Where it came from
Released in 2005, DearS: Is It A Golden Ball? serves as an original video animation (OVA) episode for the DearS series, which was originally a manga created by the duo Peach-Pit. Produced by Hal Film Maker, this special installment was designed to provide an additional comedic narrative featuring the alien 'DearS' and their interactions with human society, maintaining the lighthearted and slightly absurd tone characteristic of the franchise's anime adaptation.
The visual direction and character designs aimed to replicate the aesthetic established in the 2004 television series, focusing on the moe-influenced art style that defined the early 2000s era of the genre. While the DearS series enjoyed a dedicated following during its peak, this specific OVA was received primarily as a niche supplement for established fans, further exploring the playful dynamics of the characters within the established comedic framework.
