Where it came from
Death Note was produced by the acclaimed studio Madhouse and first aired in Japan in 2006. Adapted from the influential manga series by writer Tsugumi Ohba and artist Takeshi Obata, the project was part of a broader cultural movement in the mid-2000s that pushed psychological thrillers and high-stakes moral dilemmas into the mainstream anime market.
The series was directed by Tetsuro Araki, who sought to emphasize the tension between the protagonist Light Yagami and his elusive nemesis, L, through sharp, atmospheric visuals and a unique color palette. Upon its release, it was widely praised for its intricate cat-and-mouse narrative and became a defining work of the suspense genre, significantly broadening the global reach of the seinen demographic.
