Debutante Detective Corps begins with introductions to the five main characters, Miyuki, Reika, Youko, Nina, and Kimiko. It seems these five girls are incredibly rich and have been sent a threatening video tape by forces unknown. A police guard is set up at the school where the girls have enrolled. Kimiko, however, doesn't like the idea of being cooped up at school, and convinces the rest of the girls to trick the police into leaving. No sooner are the police gone, however, then the girls are assaulted by three armed terrorists. What ensues is a rather silly escapade with our heroines attempting to thwart their attackers.

Where it came from
Debutante Detective Corps, known in Japan as Debutante Deka, was released as a two-part original video animation series in 1996. It emerged during a decade defined by the rapid international expansion of the anime industry, specifically catering to the burgeoning market for lighthearted, character-driven mystery narratives. The series was produced by the studio Madhouse and licensed for the North American market by ADV Films, reflecting the company's strategy of bringing diverse genres to Western audiences during the mid-nineties home video boom.
The series focuses on a trio of high school girls who establish a private detective agency, leaning into tropes of the era that blended school-life aesthetics with whimsical criminal investigation. The character designs emphasize the archetypal visual language of nineties shojo-influenced animation, aiming for a balance of comedic appeal and accessible drama. While it garnered modest attention as a niche title within the competitive ADV catalog, it remains a nostalgic artifact of an era when boutique anime distribution prioritized varied experimental releases for an expanding fan base.
