Many years have passed since humanity was driven to the brink of extinction by the sudden emergence of the unknown life forms Gadoll. Those humans that survived now dwell in a 3000 meter-high mobile fortress Deca-dence built to protect themselves from the Gadoll threat.
Denizens of Deca-dence fall into two categories: Gears, warriors who fight the Gadoll daily, and Tankers, those without the skills to fight. One day, Natsume, a Tanker girl who dreams of becoming a Gear meets surly Kaburagi, an armor repairman of Deca-dence.
This chance meeting between the seemingly two opposites, the girl with a positive attitude who never gives up on her dreams and the realist who has given up on his, will eventually shake the future course of this world.

Where it came from
Deca-Dence was produced by Studio NUT and released in 2020 as an original science fiction anime series. It was conceived as a high-concept project that subverts traditional post-apocalyptic tropes by contrasting the gritty, industrial aesthetic of a massive mobile fortress against a hidden, virtual reality layer that dictates the lives of its inhabitants. The series explores themes of purpose and individuality, positing a world where humanity is pushed to the brink of extinction by strange biological entities known as Gadoll.
The series was directed by Yuzuru Tachikawa, who aimed to blend intense, kinetic action sequences with a complex, meta-narrative structure. Tachikawa, previously known for his work on Mob Psycho 100, utilized a distinct visual dichotomy between the worn, mechanical look of the Deca-Dence fortress and the sleek, digitized environment of the governing entity. Upon its release, the show was well-regarded by critics for its ambitious storytelling and its willingness to pivot genres halfway through the season, distinguishing it from typical seasonal action anime.
