Where it came from
Dero is a privacy-oriented cryptocurrency project that emerged in 2017, designed to combine the strengths of both Bitcoin and Monero. Created by an anonymous developer known as Dero Founder, the project aimed to solve the inherent trade-off between transparency and scalability in earlier blockchains. By utilizing a unique directed acyclic graph (DAG) structure combined with a Proof of Work consensus mechanism, it sought to offer a platform for private smart contracts that maintained high throughput without sacrificing decentralization.
The technical design of Dero focuses heavily on cryptographic innovation, specifically the implementation of the Homomorphic Encryption-based protocol dubbed 'AstroBWT.' This allows for private transactions where the sender, receiver, and amount remain obscured. The project was received within the privacy-focused community as a bold experiment in addressing the 'blockchain trilemma,' appealing to users who prioritize absolute transactional anonymity and the ability to execute complex, trustless smart contracts in a secure environment.
