After years of refining his art, Yotaro was promoted to the rank of Shinuchi and inherited the title of 3rd Generation Sukeroku. For the sake of his master Yakumo, Konatsu, and to change the image of Sukeroku inside them both, what kind of rakugo will Yotaro discover?

Where it came from
Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju was produced by Studio DEEN and released in 2017 as the second season of a critically acclaimed anime adaptation of Haruko Kumota's manga series. The work serves as a meticulous exploration of the traditional Japanese performance art of rakugo, tracing the generational shifts of the medium against the backdrop of the Showa era. It was developed to capture the nuances of rakugo stagecraft while weaving a complex narrative about legacy, obsession, and the evolving identity of post-war Japan.
The series is noted for its deliberate pacing and atmospheric direction by Mamoru Hatakeyama, who sought to translate the manga's expressive character designs into a medium that emphasizes the intimacy of oral storytelling. By focusing on the interplay between the elderly master Yakumo and his successor Yotaro, the production design prioritizes subtle body language and the spatial dynamics of the performance hall. Upon its release, the series received significant praise from both critics and the rakugo community for its authentic portrayal of the craft and its commitment to serious, character-driven drama.
