Di Gi Charat: A Trip To The Planet

Di Gi Charat: A Trip to the Planet was released in 2001 as a feature-length film expansion of the popular Di Gi Charat franchise, which originated as the mascot duo for the Broccoli retail chain. Produced by the acclaimed studio Madhouse, the film serves as a surreal, high-energy departure from the series' usual short-form comedy format. It follows the protagonist, Dejiko, and her companions as they travel through space, blending the character's signature bratty personality with an eccentric, expansive visual style characteristic of early 2000s experimental anime.

The film's design aesthetic leans heavily into the playful, vibrant, and deliberately chaotic visual language established by character designer Koge-Donbo. By transitioning the franchise from episodic shorts to a feature film, the production team at Madhouse aimed to elevate the series' modest mascot origins into a more narrative-driven experience. While the project was met with mixed reviews from critics who found its manic pacing challenging, it remains a significant piece of merchandise-driven animation history that solidified the cultural footprint of the Di Gi Charat brand.
