Synopsis

Dr. Taylor was on a paleontology mission with his son, Max in Africa. Rex, Max's best friend, joins along as well. When Max had stumbled across some magic stone slabs with images of dinosaurs, the boys and their friend Zoe were being called out by the dinosaurs for help. It seems that an evil organization called the "Alpha Gang", led by the nefarious Dr. Z, traveled back in time to hunt down the dinosaurs so that they could take over the world by using those dinosaurs. It is up to Max, Rex, and their friend Zoe to travel around the world, defeating Dr. Z and the Alpha Gang while hunting down the dinosaurs.

Provenance

Where it came from

Dinosaur King was produced by Sunrise and released in 2007 as a multimedia franchise developed by Sega. It emerged during a period when Japanese animation studios were heavily invested in toy-linked series, combining elements of card-battling games with prehistoric creatures. The show served as a tie-in to the arcade game of the same name, which used physical collectible cards to summon dinosaurs in a system similar to Sega’s earlier Mushiking: King of the Beetles.

The series design focuses on the adventures of the D-Team, featuring colorful, high-energy animation that was intended to appeal to a global youth audience. Critics and viewers often compared its structural tropes—such as collecting and evolution mechanics—to contemporary monster-capture franchises. While it holds a nostalgic place for those who grew up with 2000s-era Saturday morning cartoons, its design remains a distinct artifact of Sega's attempt to bridge the gap between interactive arcade experiences and traditional episodic storytelling.
