Where it came from
Dogeza: I Tried Asking While Kowtowing is an anime adaptation of a popular manga series by Kazuki Funatsu, which debuted in 2020. The series falls into the niche 'ecchi' comedy genre, centering on a protagonist who attempts to negotiate various favors by prostrating himself in the traditional Japanese 'dogeza' position. Produced by studio Adnero, the series was designed as a short-form format, consisting of brief episodes that lean into its absurd premise and slapstick visual gags.
The character designs and animation style were crafted to reflect the exaggerated, comedic tone of the original manga. As a project, it occupies a specific space in modern late-night anime programming, relying on static-heavy animation techniques and a highly repetitive narrative structure. Upon its release, it was received primarily by fans of unconventional gag-based series, noted largely for its commitment to a single, repetitive visual joke.
