Where it came from
Released in 1995 as a theatrical companion to the Doraemon film franchise, 2112-nen Doraemon Tanjou explores the origin story of the titular robotic cat. Produced by Shin-Ei Animation, the short film provides a canonical explanation for Doraemon’s blue coloration and his affinity for dorayaki, contextualizing his manufacture at the Matsushiba Robot Factory in the 22nd century.
The film was directed by Yoshitomo Yonetani and utilizes a narrative frame that bridges the gap between the futuristic world of the 22nd century and the series' established contemporary setting. It serves as an essential piece of lore for the franchise, emphasizing the character's status as a 'defective' robot who undergoes rigorous training, a thematic choice intended to deepen the audience's emotional connection to the character's vulnerabilities and eventual bond with the Nobi family.
