Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1987 as the eighth feature film in the long-running Doraemon franchise, Nobita and the Dragon Rider marks a distinct entry in the series' transition from purely lighthearted adventure to more epic, world-building narratives. Directed by Tsutomu Shibayama, who helmed a majority of the classic Doraemon films, the movie follows the titular characters as they discover a hidden subterranean civilization inhabited by dinosaurs who have evolved into a sentient, humanoid species. The film reflects the late 1980s Japanese cultural fascination with paleontology and science fiction, serving as both an educational exploration of prehistoric life and an environmental allegory regarding humanity's relationship with nature.

The film was produced by Shin-Ei Animation and remains a notable example of the traditional cel-animation techniques employed by the studio during this era. Its design aesthetic maintains the iconic, clean lines established by creator Fujiko F. Fujio, whose manga series provided the foundational source material for the film's narrative. Upon its release, it was well-received by audiences, securing its place within the golden era of Doraemon films that prioritized grand, imaginative settings while grounding the emotional stakes in the close-knit friendship between Nobita and his robotic companion, Doraemon.
