Doraemon: Nobita Gets Lost in Space

Doraemon: Nobita Gets Lost in Space, released in 1999 as the twentieth feature film in the long-running franchise, was produced by Asatsu DK to commemorate the series' enduring cultural presence. The film fits into the established tradition of Doraemon cinema, which balances science-fiction tropes with the emotional core of the friendship between Nobita and the futuristic robot cat, Doraemon. It was conceived as a family-oriented adventure, aiming to expand the scope of the manga's domestic settings into the vastness of outer space.

The production maintains the classic visual style established by the original manga creator, Fujiko F. Fujio, whose studio continued to oversee the character designs and narrative tone after his passing. The film was directed by Tsutomu Shibayama, a veteran of the franchise, who sought to maintain the high standard of animation quality expected by a multi-generational audience. Upon its release, the film was received as a stable and reliable entry in the yearly series, appreciated for its adherence to the core themes of bravery, curiosity, and the importance of companionship.
