Doraemon: Nobita in Dorabian Nights

Released in 1991, Nobita in Dorabian Nights is the twelfth entry in the long-running Doraemon feature film series produced by Shin-Ei Animation. The film was conceived as part of an annual tradition that began in 1980, aimed at expanding the Doraemon franchise into epic, feature-length adventures that took the characters beyond their suburban neighborhood and into imaginative, often mythological settings. This specific installment draws heavy inspiration from the classic folk tales of One Thousand and One Nights.

The production sought to blend the familiar comedic chemistry of the main cast with the high-stakes, magical atmosphere of the Arabian Nights. Director Tsutomu Shibayama led the creative team, building upon the established visual style of the manga creator Fujiko F. Fujio. While the film was crafted primarily for a family audience, it was well-received for its ambitious world-building and the seamless integration of Doraemon’s futuristic gadgets into a traditional fantasy narrative, cementing its place as a staple of early 1990s Japanese animation.
