Where it came from
Double Decker! Doug & Kirill EX consists of two special episodes released in 2019 following the conclusion of the 2018 anime series. Produced by Sunrise, these episodes were designed to expand upon the buddy-cop dynamic of the original show, which parodies classic police procedural tropes within a stylized, futuristic setting. The narrative continues the adventures of investigators Doug Billingham and Kirill Vrubel, maintaining the franchise's signature blend of high-stakes crime drama and irreverent humor.
The creative direction for the series, including the EX specials, was led by director Joji Furuta and screenwriter Masafumi Takadera. They aimed to further explore the interpersonal chemistry between the protagonists while deepening the lore of the city of Lisvalletta. The project is noted for its experimental visual style and its lighthearted approach to the 'buddy cop' genre, which helped the series cultivate a dedicated cult following during and after its initial broadcast.
