Dr. Slump: Hoyoyo! Space Adventure

Dr. Slump: Hoyoyo! Space Adventure was produced by Toei Animation and released in 1982 as the first theatrical feature based on Akira Toriyama's popular manga series. Following the success of the television anime adaptation, the film was conceived as a high-energy, standalone adventure that captured the absurd, slapstick humor of Penguin Village. It brought the eccentric characters, including the genius inventor Senbei Norimaki and the super-powered android Arale, from the small screen to the cinemas during the height of the series' initial cultural impact in Japan.

The film's visual style directly translates Toriyama’s distinctive manga aesthetic, characterized by rounded, exaggerated character designs and surreal background art. By placing the cast in a space-faring narrative, the studio leaned into the playful science-fiction tropes that defined the franchise. Upon its release, the film was well-received by audiences, serving as a primary vehicle for solidifying the popularity of Dr. Slump during the early 1980s and establishing the collaborative relationship between Toei Animation and Akira Toriyama that would later define the production of Dragon Ball.
