Where it came from
Dragon Ball: Episode of Bardock was released in 2011 as a direct spin-off special based on the spin-off manga by Naho Ooishi. It was conceived as a canonical expansion to the original 1990 television special, Bardock – The Father of Goku, serving to explore a 'what if' scenario in which Bardock survives the destruction of Planet Vegeta. Produced by Toei Animation, the special was originally screened at the Jump Super Anime Tour and was designed to satisfy fan curiosity regarding the character's mysterious fate and his confrontation with Frieza’s ancestor, Chilled.
The narrative follows Bardock as he is transported to the past, where he transforms into a Super Saiyan for the first time, establishing a foundational legend within the franchise's lore. The animation style mirrors the aesthetic of the later Dragon Ball Kai series, emphasizing a cleaner, more digital look compared to the original 1990s cel-shaded production. Upon its release, it was received as a nostalgic yet transformative addition to the mythos, officially integrating the Super Saiyan transformation into the character's legacy.
