Dragon Quest: Your Story

Dragon Quest: Your Story is a 2019 3D computer-animated feature film based on the narrative of the 1992 video game Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride. Produced by Shirogumi, the film was conceived as a high-fidelity cinematic retelling of the game's multi-generational story, utilizing advanced character animation to modernize the classic RPG experience for a broader audience. The project was directed by Takashi Yamazaki, who sought to translate the iconic character designs of Akira Toriyama into a fully realized 3D environment while preserving the nostalgic emotional weight of the original plot.

The production underwent intense scrutiny upon its release due to its radical narrative choices in the final act, which diverged significantly from the source material and alienated a portion of the long-standing fan base. While the technical artistry and visual fidelity of the CGI were widely praised by critics, the controversial thematic conclusion led to a polarized reception. Despite the debate surrounding its creative direction, the film stands as a significant experiment in adapting traditional Japanese role-playing games into prestige animated feature formats.
