Where it came from
Dragon Raja II -The Mourner's Eyes- is a 2024 original net animation produced by Tencent Penguin Pictures, continuing the adaptation of the widely popular Chinese urban fantasy novel series written by Jiang Nan. The series emerged from the expansive multimedia franchise built around the original novels, which follow Lu Mingfei, an ordinary student who discovers his identity as a dragon hybrid and enters a secret world of occult warfare.
The animation reflects the high-budget technical ambition common in Tencent's recent forays into high-fidelity 3D CGI storytelling. The production aimed to elevate the visual standard for domestic Chinese fantasy series, focusing on complex character modeling and dynamic combat sequences to capture the brooding, melancholic tone of the original narrative arc. Upon its release, it was noted primarily by the existing fan base for its commitment to the source material's intricate world-building and its shift toward a more cinematic, darker aesthetic.
