Dragon's Dogma

Dragon's Dogma, released as an original net animation in 2020, was developed by Sublimation and distributed by Netflix. The series is an adaptation of Capcom’s 2012 action role-playing game of the same name, which gained a cult following for its deep combat systems and unique 'pawn' companion mechanics. This production was part of a larger initiative by Netflix to expand its catalog of anime based on established gaming franchises, aiming to bring the dark fantasy world of Gransys to a broader streaming audience.

The production utilized a hybrid approach, combining 3D computer-generated imagery with traditional 2D aesthetic sensibilities, a specialty of Studio Sublimation. The creative team sought to capture the grim, high-fantasy tone of the source material while focusing on the protagonist Ethan's quest for vengeance against the dragon. Upon its release, the adaptation received a mixed critical reception, with praise often directed at the loyalty to the game's creature designs and world-building, while some viewers noted the stylistic shift necessitated by the studio's reliance on cel-shaded 3D animation.
