Dragon's Heaven

Dragon's Heaven was released in 1988 as an original video animation (OVA) produced by the studio AIC. Conceived during the height of the bubble-era anime boom, the project served as a showcase for the visual imagination of creator Makoto Kobayashi. The production was heavily influenced by the aesthetic of industrial design and heavy metal sci-fi, focusing on the mechanical interplay between futuristic combat vehicles and desolate landscapes rather than traditional character-driven narrative.

Makoto Kobayashi, a renowned mechanical designer, directed and designed the project with a distinct focus on tactile, gritty realism. The animation style is frequently cited for its ambitious use of detailed mechanical modeling and textured background art. While the plot—centering on a warrior named Ikuru and an ancient defensive robot—is often described as minimalist, the work gained a lasting reputation among collectors and animation historians for its experimental visual direction and its unique place in the history of Japanese mecha design.
