DREAMLAND

Dreamland, a 2019 neo-Western thriller directed by Miles Joris-Peyrafitte, emerged from a script by Nicolaas Zwart that appeared on the 2017 Black List. Set against the backdrop of the Dust Bowl in 1930s Texas, the film explores the intersection of survival and moral complexity when a teenage boy discovers a wounded bank robber hiding in his barn. The production sought to capture a gritty, atmospheric aesthetic, drawing on classic cinematic depictions of the Great Depression while offering a contemporary perspective on the outlaw subgenre.

The film was largely received for its visual ambition and the central performances of Margot Robbie and Finn Cole. By utilizing naturalistic lighting and wide, desolate landscapes, the creative team intended to mirror the internal isolation of the characters. While critics noted the influence of Terrence Malick’s directorial style, the project stands as a focused character study that emphasizes the psychological weight of the era rather than relying solely on the tropes of the period drama.
