On the hunt for her missing father, master thief Clay heads off into an unexplored dungeon—but much to her surprise, the dungeon’s caretaker offers her a job! Thievery hasn’t worked for her thus far, so perhaps this new career path will take her closer to finding her dad. But change is never easy. From interviewing monster guardians to positioning traps to confound would-be explorers, Clay has a lot to learn about what it means to be one of the dungeon people.

Where it came from
Dungeon People, or Dungeon no Meshi, is a 2024 anime adaptation produced by OLM, based on the manga series by Kui Ryoko. The narrative follows a professional dungeon explorer named Clay, who is tasked with navigating a labyrinthine facility that functions as a surreal, subterranean workplace. It emerged as a unique entry in the dungeon-crawl genre, prioritizing the logistical and societal structure of the dungeon itself rather than traditional high-fantasy tropes.
The animation direction by OLM captures a distinct visual balance between mundane office-like bureaucracy and the high-stakes environment of fantasy exploration. By grounding the fantastical setting in familiar professional anxieties, the series seeks to explore themes of labor, maintenance, and the human condition. It has been noted for its contemplative pacing and detailed world-building, which serve to differentiate it from more combat-centric contemporary series.
