Among a primordial ocean of stars, two innocent, identical children share a vessel. It comes to ground on a strange, liminal world, where a mischievous spirit appears, announcing itself as their guide on the nine-month journey ahead of them. Here in the world we know, meanwhile, a bereaved and pregnant woman struggles with grief and terrible uncertainty.

Where it came from
Echo was released by Toho in 2026 as part of their ongoing effort to revitalize their catalog of non-kaiju intellectual properties. The film was developed to explore atmospheric science fiction through the lens of traditional Japanese cinematic minimalism, stepping away from the studio's more commercial tentpole franchises to focus on character-driven narratives.
The film's visual identity was spearheaded by a team emphasizing long-take cinematography and practical lighting techniques, aiming to evoke a sense of quiet isolation rather than high-octane spectacle. While the reception was initially reserved due to its deliberate pacing, it has since been noted by critics as a successful stylistic departure for the studio's contemporary portfolio.
