Where it came from
Eden of the East: Falling Down serves as the first of two compilation films following the conclusion of the 2009 anime series created and directed by Kenji Kamiyama. Produced by Production I.G, the film was designed to bridge the narrative gap between the television series' cliffhanger ending and its ultimate resolution. Kamiyama sought to maintain the sophisticated, socially conscious tone of the original work while transitioning the dense, conspiracy-laden plot into a cinematic format.
The film's visual identity, characterized by the character designs of Chica Umino, reflects a deliberate blend of grounded realism and stylized mystery. Umino, primarily known for her manga work, provided a distinct, humanistic touch to the series that set it apart from typical high-concept thrillers of the era. Upon its release, the film was noted by critics for its ambitious attempts to tackle contemporary themes of Japanese societal apathy and economic stagnation, cementing its reputation as a significant entry in the studio's catalog.
