Where it came from
Eko Eko Azaraku, released as an original video animation in 2007 by Toei Animation, serves as a dark adaptation of the long-running horror manga series created by Shinichi Koga. The franchise, which first debuted in the 1970s, centers on Misa Kuroi, a mysterious and vengeful witch who intercedes in the lives of troubled individuals, often leading to macabre and supernatural consequences. This particular adaptation was produced during a period when the franchise was undergoing a resurgence in live-action and animated media, aiming to capture the gothic atmosphere and occult themes that defined Koga's original vision.
The character design and aesthetic for this OVA were developed to align with the somber, unsettling tone inherent to the source material. By focusing on the darker elements of Japanese horror, the production team sought to balance the classic 'magical girl' tropes with horror subversions. Upon its release, it was received primarily by fans of the established manga series and horror enthusiasts, standing as a notable entry in a sprawling multimedia franchise that has consistently explored the grim intersection of high school life and the occult over several decades.
