Electromagnetic Girlfriend

Electromagnetic Girlfriend was produced by Brain's Base in 2009 as a two-episode original video animation adaptation of the light novel series by Kentaro Katayama. The project emerged during a period when the studio was gaining recognition for its ability to adapt atmospheric, character-driven seinen titles, positioning this work as a psychological mystery rather than a traditional romantic comedy.

The character designs were handled by Kazuya Shinoda, who sought to capture the series' distinct blend of gritty urban realism and unsettling psychological tension. Upon release, the series was noted for its deliberate pacing and dark thematic exploration of obsession and trauma, finding a niche audience that appreciated its departure from mainstream tropes, though its limited episode count left much of the original source material's deeper lore largely untouched.
