Elf 17

Elf 17 was released in 1987 as a two-part original video animation (OVA) produced by Agent 21. It was based on the manga series by Shotaro Ishinomori, a legendary figure in Japanese comics known for creating foundational works like Cyborg 009 and Kamen Rider. The transition from manga to screen reflects the mid-eighties trend of adapting niche science-fiction titles for the emerging home video market.

The animation focuses on the adventures of a young woman who possesses the ability to age and de-age herself at will, a concept that allows the narrative to oscillate between comedy and high-stakes space opera. While the visual style is characteristic of the late 1980s OVA boom—prioritizing fluid character movement and vibrant color palettes—the series is often noted by historians for its experimental tone, which attempted to balance Ishinomori’s complex sci-fi world-building with a more accessible, character-driven aesthetic.
