Where it came from
ELF Academy is a series of original net animation shorts produced by miHoYo, released in 2021 as a lighthearted spin-off of the popular action role-playing game Honkai Impact 3rd. The series was designed to shift away from the game's typically somber and melodramatic narrative, opting instead for a comedic, slice-of-life tone that highlights the interactions between the game’s Valkyries and their assistant entities, known as ELFs, or Equipment Living Forms.
The animation utilizes a chibi-inspired aesthetic, prioritizing expressive character designs and slapstick humor to expand the franchise's world-building in a more accessible format. Produced to capitalize on the popularity of the game's evolving roster, the series was well-received by the established player base as a charming palate cleanser that provided deeper, albeit whimsical, insight into the daily lives of characters who are often portrayed in more intense circumstances within the main game canon.
