End of Summer

End of Summer was produced in 1994 by SoftCel Pictures, a studio that gained notoriety in the early 1990s for its role in the direct-to-video adult animation market. The title emerged during a brief but significant period of western-produced anime-style content, which aimed to capitalize on the rising popularity of Japanese animation tropes among domestic audiences. It was released as an original video animation, a format that allowed independent studios to bypass traditional theatrical distribution models in favor of direct sales to specialty video retailers.

The creative direction of the title relied on the quintessential aesthetic of 1990s cel-based animation, characterized by bold lines and limited character motion. It was designed to mimic the stylistic sensibilities of the burgeoning otaku culture in the West, though it lacked the formal affiliation with major Japanese animation houses. Upon its release, it was received primarily as a niche curiosity within the adult animation underground, noted more for its participation in a distinct era of experimental video production than for any lasting critical or cultural influence.
