Eureka Seven Hi-Evolution 1

Eureka Seven Hi-Evolution 1 was released in 2017 as the first entry in a trilogy of films revisiting the seminal 2005 mecha anime series produced by studio Bones. The project was conceived as both a reimagining and an expansion of the original narrative, aiming to frame the story of Renton Thurston and Eureka through a new lens while incorporating remastered footage and brand-new animation sequences that reflect a decade of technological evolution in the industry.

The film was directed by Tomoki Kyoda, the original series director, who sought to deepen the psychological exploration of the characters while adjusting the timeline to emphasize the backstory of the First Summer of Love. Dai Sato returned to pen the screenplay, attempting to weave a more complex, non-linear perspective on the events that preceded the television series. Upon its release, the film garnered a divisive reception, as veteran fans of the original series were often challenged by the structural changes and the deliberate choice to recontextualize familiar beats through a more experimental, revisionist narrative approach.
