Where it came from
Evil or Live, known in Chinese as Lǐng Jì, is an original net animation series produced by Haoliners Animation League. Released in 2017, the series emerged during a period of significant growth for Chinese animation studios aiming to capture both domestic and international audiences. The narrative is set within a high-pressure boarding school environment, utilizing the thriller and psychological horror genres to comment on the intense academic competition and social isolation often experienced by youth in modern educational systems.
The design and aesthetic of the series reflect a dark, gritty visual style intended to heighten the sense of dread and entrapment felt by the protagonist. The animation team focused on character designs that emphasize vulnerability against oppressive, industrial-inspired backgrounds. Upon its release, the series garnered attention for its unconventional premise and grim atmosphere, though it also faced discussion among viewers regarding its portrayal of psychological struggle and its departure from traditional animation tropes prevalent in the regional market at the time.
