Where it came from
Fei Ren Zai: Xian Shi Wan Jia is a cinematic expansion of the popular Chinese webcomic and animated series Fei Ren Zai, which translates to Non-Human. The project was produced by FENZ, the studio responsible for the series' transition from a viral online comic to a staple of contemporary Chinese animation. It was developed to capitalize on the franchise's unique premise, which features Chinese mythological figures navigating the mundane, often chaotic challenges of modern urban life in Beijing.
The creative direction for the film maintains the distinct, clean aesthetic of the original web series while scaling up the visual fidelity for a theatrical release. By juxtaposing ancient deities with contemporary technology and corporate culture, the studio aimed to provide a humorous commentary on modern existence. Upon its debut, the film was received as a natural progression for the brand, largely praised by the existing fanbase for its faithful character characterizations and the clever integration of traditional folklore into an office-comedy format.
