Nagisa is a schoolgirl with schoolgirl tendencies, waking up late, rushing off to school and meeting up with friends upon the way. One morning Nagisa comes across a woman dressed in a strange uniform who seems to stare at her, unnerving Nagisa. Later that day, whilst staring out the window, Nagisa becomes aware of a ball bouncing by itself which flings itself towards her window seat, shattering the glass yet not harming her... Turning back to the front she finds a gaping mouth bristling with teeth inches from her face and no-one else about. She screams and the world returns to normal with her standing and the centre of curiosity of her class... why did she scream?

Where it came from
Fight!! Iczer-1 was released in 1985 as an original video animation (OVA) produced by AIC. It emerged during the mid-1980s boom of the direct-to-video market in Japan, a format that allowed animators to experiment with higher production values and more mature, niche themes than television standards typically permitted. The work is fundamentally a love letter to the giant robot and cosmic horror genres, blending the high-stakes action of mecha anime with the visceral, tentacled body horror popularized by H.P. Lovecraft.
The project was written and directed by Toshihiro Hirano, who also provided the character designs alongside Narumi Kakinouchi. They aimed to create a visually striking synthesis of gothic atmosphere and science fiction, characterized by intense color palettes and a distinctive, fluid animation style. While the series gained a cult following for its bold aesthetic and complex character dynamics, it remains a product of its time, notable largely for its influence on the aesthetic trajectory of the OVA format throughout the late 1980s.
