Year 198 of the Solar Era in Tokyo, special fire brigades are fighting against a phenomenon called spontaneous human combustion where human beings are turned into living infernos called "Infernals.” While the Infernals are first-generation cases of spontaneous human combustion, later generations possess the ability to manipulate flames while retaining human form. Shinra Kusakabe, a youth who gained the nickname Devil’s Footprints for his ability to ignite his feet at will, joins the Special Fire Force Company 8 which composes of other flames users as they work to extinguish any Infernals they encounter. As a faction that is creating Infernals appears, Shinra begins to uncover the truth behind a mysterious fire that caused the death of his family twelve years ago.

Where it came from
Fire Force, known in Japan as Enen no Shouboutai, was adapted into an anime series by studio David production and premiered in 2019. Based on the manga series by Atsushi Ohkubo, the story follows a special fire brigade fighting against spontaneous human combustion in a stylized, industrial-era Tokyo. The production was highly anticipated, as it marked another significant project for the studio following their work on the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure franchise.
The series is noted for its distinctive visual direction, characterized by highly kinetic action sequences and a bold use of color to represent the pyrotechnic abilities of the characters. Director Yuki Yase sought to emphasize the fluidity of the fire animations, often utilizing advanced compositing to distinguish the flames from the character art. Upon release, the series received praise for its technical ambition and unique aesthetic, establishing itself as a notable entry in the supernatural action genre.
