As a middle school student, Cocona has been trying to decide what to do with her life. Magical Girl, however, wasn’t a career path that she’d ever considered. When suddenly a strange girl named Papika thrusts her into a secret organization called Flip Flap, Cocona’s outlook does a radical flip-flop. Her views start to change when she is dragged into an alternate dimension called Pure Illusion where she’s charged with gathering crystal shards and fighting strange creatures. Now, between running missions and facing off against a rival organization, Cocona doesn’t have much time to consider alternate career choices. What are these shards, and why is gathering them so important? There’s a mystery to be solved and multiple worlds to be saved in FLIP FLAPPERS!

Where it came from
Flip Flappers was produced by Studio 3Hz and premiered in late 2016 as an original television anime series. Directed by Kiyotaka Oshiyama, the project sought to explore themes of adolescence and identity through a surrealist, genre-defying lens, intentionally diverging from the standardized tropes prevalent in the medium at the time. Its narrative structure, centering on the protagonists Cocona and Papika, relies heavily on vibrant, fluid animation to navigate the shifting dimensions of the Pure Illusion world.
The series is noted for its visual ambition, with Oshiyama prioritizing experimental layouts and diverse stylistic influences, ranging from high-fantasy aesthetics to psychological abstraction. While the show experienced a modest broadcast viewership, it garnered significant critical attention for its artistic ingenuity and unconventional storytelling. It has since secured a dedicated following among animation enthusiasts who value its emphasis on visual metaphor and unique creative vision.
