In the year 2041, mankind created their first space colony on the moon. But after a freak cataclysm devastated human civilisation on Earth, the republic of the moon built a domed megalopolis known as Eden. Now in the year 2267, a boy called Takeru spends his time engaging in hover-craft races against rival street gangs, unaware that he is about to embark in the journey of unearthing Eden's origin.

Where it came from
Freedom was released in 2006 as a seven-part original video animation series to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Nissin Cup Noodle brand. Produced by Sunrise and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo’s collaborator Shuhei Morita, the project was designed as a futuristic science fiction narrative that integrated high-quality 3D computer-generated imagery to tell the story of a lunar colony struggling against the constraints of a rigid, authoritarian society.
The series is noted for its distinctive visual style, characterized by a blend of traditional anime aesthetics and experimental digital rendering techniques. Beyond its narrative, it served as a sophisticated marketing vehicle that emphasized themes of liberty and self-discovery. It was well-received upon its release for its technical ambition and remains regarded as a notable entry in mid-2000s animation, particularly for its innovative use of CGI to create a cohesive, immersive moon-based setting.
