A hapless country doctor describes with breathless urgency a night-time summons to attend a young patient. Events soon take on a surreal aspect as "unearthly horses" transport him instantaneously to the bedside. The doctor, preoccupied with personal distractions and grievances against those he is employed to care for, fails to find what is revealed to be a vile, fatal wound. He is humiliated by the villagers, who are "always expecting the impossible from the doctor," and doomed to an endless return trip, losing everything.

Where it came from
A Country Doctor is a 2007 Japanese animated short film directed by Koji Yamamura, based on the short story by Franz Kafka. Produced by Studio DEEN as part of the Anime Classics Literature Series, the film was created to translate Kafka's surreal, anxiety-ridden prose into a visual medium that emphasizes the disjointed and nightmarish qualities of the source material. Yamamura utilized a distinct, expressionistic animation style that mimics hand-drawn illustrations, effectively capturing the protagonist's descent into bureaucratic and existential chaos.
Upon its release, the film was highly praised for its artistic ambition and faithfulness to the tone of Kafka’s work. It serves as a notable example of experimental animation within the anime industry, moving away from traditional character designs toward a more distorted, fluid aesthetic. Critics frequently noted how the film uses the medium of animation to realize imagery that would be difficult to achieve in live action, cementing its reputation as a definitive adaptation of one of Kafka's most enigmatic texts.
