Where it came from
FrFr! ~Free! short movie~ was released in 2013 as a series of short, comedic bonus segments bundled with the home video releases of the first season of Kyoto Animation's hit swimming anime, Free!. These episodes were designed to offer a lighthearted departure from the main series' dramatic narrative, focusing on the everyday humorous interactions between the central characters at Iwatobi High School.
The production team at Kyoto Animation utilized these shorts to expand the franchise's characterization, allowing the animators to experiment with more exaggerated, playful expressions and slapstick situations. This approach was well-received by fans, who appreciated the added depth these moments provided to the main cast and the studio's signature attention to detailed character animation.
