Fuku-chan was one of the most popular newspaper comic strip boy-characters in Japan at the time. The film portrays a submarine attack on an enemy cargo ship. Though this, too, was to boost patriotism, Japanese children particularly enjoyed the scenes in which the kitchen crew cooked in the submarine kitchen. Released in November of the same year, the food shortage was quite serious in Japan, and the abundant food supply in the submarine kitchen -- vegetables, fruit, fish, rice, and more which were already luxury items in Japan at the time -- was prepared into various dishes along with a merry, rhythmic song.

Where it came from
Fuku-chan no Sensuikan, or Fuku-chan's Submarine, was produced in 1944 by Shinseisaku Doga. It features the popular manga character Fuku-chan, created by Ryuichi Yokoyama, who first appeared in the Asahi Shimbun in 1936. This short animated film was commissioned during the final stages of the Second World War as a piece of national propaganda intended to boost morale among the youth, depicting the character participating in the war effort through the operation of a submarine.
The film was directed by Mitsuyo Seo, an influential figure in early Japanese animation known for his technical experimentation and work on wartime propaganda films like Momotaro's Sea Eagles. The animation style reflects the aesthetic constraints of its time, utilizing a simplified, clear visual language to ensure the messaging was accessible to children. Despite the overtly political nature of the production, it remains a significant artifact for animation historians studying the development of the medium in Japan during the 1940s.
