Fukusuke

Fukusuke is a short animated film produced by Otogi Production, a pioneering studio founded by Ryuichi Yokoyama that played a significant role in the early development of post-war Japanese television animation. The film draws its inspiration from the traditional Japanese figure of the same name, a charm often depicted as a man with a large head and a jovial expression, historically associated with good fortune and prosperity in commerce.

The animation reflects the experimental and often whimsical aesthetic favored by Otogi Production during their active years in the late 1950s and 1960s. By adapting traditional folklore and cultural iconography into the medium of animation, the studio sought to bridge the gap between classic Japanese storytelling and the burgeoning modern medium of film, resulting in a piece that serves as an interesting artifact of the studio's broader commitment to artistic exploration in early Japanese animation.
