Full Moon wo Sagashite: Kawaii Kawaii Daibouken

Full Moon wo Sagashite: Kawaii Kawaii Daibouken was produced by Studio DEEN as a special original video animation released in 2002. It serves as a lighthearted companion piece to the primary anime series, which adapted Arina Tanemura’s shoujo manga about Mitsuki Koyama, a young girl with a terminal throat condition pursuing her dream of becoming a pop idol with the help of two shinigami. The special was created to capitalize on the series' emotional resonance, offering fans an episodic, chibi-styled adventure that leaned into the comedic and fantastical elements of the franchise.

The character design for this special retains the distinct visual identity established by Studio DEEN’s adaptation, emphasizing the delicate, ornate aesthetic characteristic of early 2000s shoujo anime. While the main series was celebrated for its dramatic pacing and musical themes, this special was designed to be a whimsical palate cleanser. It was received by the audience as a niche, collectible side story, appreciated primarily by dedicated followers of the manga and television series who sought to spend additional time with the cast in a lower-stakes narrative environment.
