Futago no Monchhichi

Futago no Monchhichi, known in English markets as The Monchhichis, was a 1980 animated television series produced by Ashi Productions. The series was developed to capitalize on the immense global popularity of the Monchhichi dolls, which were originally created by Koichi Sekiguchi for the Sekiguchi Corporation in 1974. By the time the show aired, the character brand had already become a cultural phenomenon, leading to this televised expansion to further solidify their presence in the burgeoning merchandising landscape of the early 1980s.

The character design leaned heavily into the established aesthetic of the dolls, emphasizing their distinctive thumb-sucking primate appearance and soft-toy appeal. Ashi Productions intended for the show to serve as a whimsical, family-oriented adventure series that translated the static charm of the plush figures into a moving narrative. While the series played a significant role in maintaining the brand's visibility during its peak years, its reception was primarily centered on its status as a tie-in product aimed at young audiences, effectively bridging the gap between toy collectors and Saturday morning cartoon viewers.
