Where it came from
Fuurinkanzan was released in 2013 as an original video animation (OVA) produced by Lune Pictures. The project was conceived as a stylized historical exploration, drawing thematic inspiration from the battle standard of the Sengoku period warlord Takeda Shingen. By choosing to focus on the cryptic 'Wind, Forest, Fire, and Mountain' principles attributed to Sun Tzu, the studio aimed to blend traditional Japanese aesthetics with a kinetic, modern animation style that was beginning to define the independent OVA market of the early 2010s.
The design and visual direction were crafted to emphasize high-contrast silhouettes and fluid combat sequences, moving away from the more static character-driven tropes common in similar titles of the era. While it garnered attention for its technical ambition and commitment to atmospheric storytelling, the production remained a niche release. It is remembered today primarily by collectors of independent studio works for its experimental approach to historical drama and its departure from conventional narrative pacing.
