Galaxy Express 999: Can You Live Like A Warrior?

Released in 1979 by Toei Animation, Can You Live Like A Warrior? is a specialized television special that expands upon the philosophical landscape of Leiji Matsumoto’s Galaxy Express 999. Created during the height of the franchise's popularity, the film was produced to delve deeper into the existential burdens faced by the protagonist, Tetsuro Hoshino, as he journeys toward the Andromeda Galaxy. It reflects the somber, reflective tone that defined Matsumoto’s work, focusing on the sacrifice required to gain cybernetic immortality and the moral weight of such a transition.

The visual direction and character designs retain the distinct, elongated aesthetic characteristic of Matsumoto’s vision, emphasizing the isolation of space travel. The special was well-received by audiences for its thematic maturity, standing as an essential companion piece that bridges the narrative gap between the series' episodic adventures. It remains highly regarded for its melancholic soundtrack and the way it distills the core conflict of the series into a singular, contemplative experience for the viewer.
