Where it came from
Galaxy Express 999: Eternal Fantasy was released in 1998 as the third feature film in Leiji Matsumoto’s seminal space opera franchise. It serves as a narrative bridge following the events of the original series and the 1981 film Adieu Galaxy Express 999, centering on Tetsuro Hoshino’s final journey to uncover the secrets of the machine empire and the true nature of his immortality. The project was conceived to commemorate the franchise's enduring legacy, blending the classic melancholic tone of the original manga with updated 1990s animation sensibilities.
The film was produced by Toei Animation and directed by Kazuyoshi Yokoyama, who sought to honor Matsumoto’s distinct visual style characterized by sprawling celestial vistas and the iconic, gothic design of the titular steam locomotive. While the animation style sparked discussion among long-time fans who compared it to the more experimental aesthetics of the earlier films, Eternal Fantasy is widely regarded as a significant concluding chapter. Its North American home media release by Discotek Media has been praised by collectors for its efforts to restore and preserve the original cinematic presentation for contemporary audiences.
