Where it came from
Galaxy Fraulein Yuna debuted as a multi-media project in the early 1990s, blending magical girl tropes with space opera aesthetics. The 1995 OVA series, produced by Movic and animated by studio Raik, was adapted from the popular PC Engine video games. It sought to capture the vibrant, character-driven energy of its source material, focusing on the whimsical adventures of Yuna Kagurazaka as she assumes her mantle as the protector of the galaxy.
The character design was spearheaded by Mika Akitaka, a prominent artist known for his work on mechanical designs and iconic anime heroines. Akitaka leaned into a distinct aesthetic that balanced traditional science fiction hardware with stylized, colorful character silhouettes. Upon its release, the OVA was received as a lighthearted, visually appealing entry in the mid-90s boom of OVA productions, resonating with fans of the game series for its faithful translation of the character dynamics and lighthearted tone.
