Galaxy Fraulein Yuna Returns

Galaxy Fraulein Yuna Returns was released in 1996 as a two-part original video animation series, serving as a continuation of the multimedia franchise created by Mika Akitaka. The series emerged from the popular 1990s trend of character-driven space operas that blended science fiction with 'magical girl' tropes. It was produced by Movic and animators at various collaborating studios, aiming to expand upon the high-energy, colorful aesthetic established in the earlier PC Engine video games and the initial OVA series.

The character designs, handled by Akitaka himself, were central to the production’s identity, emphasizing vibrant costumes and a lighthearted, heroic tone that resonated with fans of the era’s character-heavy animation. The production was intended to capitalize on the dedicated fanbase of Yuna Kagurazaka, the series' protagonist. Upon release, it was received as a standard entry in the 90s OVA market, noted primarily by genre enthusiasts for its lighthearted spirit and the continued commitment to Akitaka’s distinctive mechanical and character design style.
