Last summer. Friends. And Kaiju.
In the summer of 1989, sixth graders Boko, Joe, and Junichi are on their last summer vacation as elementary school students. As if to cut through their daily routine, a monster named Gyaos suddenly attacks Tokyo. The four are petrified in midst of a town turned to ruins. As Gyaos sets its sight on them, a huge turtle-shaped kaiju appears in front of the boys. Its name is Gamera. Despite its injuries, Gamera fights Gyaos with all its might. This would only mark the beginning of the boys' "Summer of Kaiju".

Where it came from
Gamera -Rebirth- was released in 2023 as a six-episode original net animation series, marking the first major screen appearance for the giant turtle kaiju since 2006. Produced by Kadokawa and distributed globally via Netflix, the project was intended to revitalize the long-running franchise for a modern audience by blending traditional monster-battling spectacle with a serialized narrative set in 1989 Japan.
The character design for Gamera and his classic antagonists was handled by Atsushi Tamura, who aimed to preserve the iconic, rugged silhouette of the Showa-era monster while incorporating sharper, more aggressive details suited for 3D animation. Upon its debut, the series was received as a respectful homage to the Showa era, noted for its nostalgic setting and high-intensity action sequences that appealed to both long-time fans and new viewers.
