Synopsis

After Shijin's concern on the absence of his girlfriend Nagisa, Gamba, Bobo, Gakusha, Ikasama, Shijin, and Yoisho travel to the South Island looking for her, only to find out about a family of Japanese otters, endangered by a wild dog named Black. When Chuta, a badly injured mouse, staggers off a ship in Tokyo Harbor, he bumps into out-of-towners Gamba and Bobo, who are at a party being given by Yoisho, the sailor-mouse. Chuta tells the local mice that he has escaped from Devil's Island, where Norio the evil ermine has crushed the mice with his reign of terror.

Provenance

Where it came from

Gamba to Kawauso no Bouken, released in 1991, serves as a feature-length cinematic adaptation of the literary works by Atsuo Saito. Produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha, the film expands upon the narrative established in the earlier television series, Gamba no Bouken, which had gained a devoted following since its 1975 debut. The production sought to elevate the source material through refined animation techniques and a more dramatic, somber tone suited for the big screen, focusing on the titular mouse and his companions as they journey to protect a community of otters from a cruel nemesis.

The film was helmed by director Tomoharu Katsumata, who utilized the studio’s signature style to create a visually distinct world that balanced the whimsy of the original characters with high-stakes environmental storytelling. Critics and audiences of the era noted the film for its technical proficiency and its earnest approach to themes of courage and solidarity. By blending the charm of classic adventure narratives with the sophisticated production values typical of Tokyo Movie Shinsha’s prime, the work remains a significant entry in Japanese animation history, preserved as a touchstone for viewers who grew up with the expansive Gamba franchise.
