Ganbare, Douki-chan Special

Ganbare, Douki-chan originated as a popular series of illustrations by the artist Yom, published primarily on Twitter starting in 2019. The series depicts the daily romantic struggles of an office worker, known as Douki-chan, as she navigates her unrequited feelings for her coworker. The art style is celebrated for its detailed character designs and a focus on emotive, everyday scenarios that resonated deeply with a wide online audience.

The 2021 special, produced by AtelierPontdarc and distributed by NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan, transitioned these static illustrations into an animated format. The adaptation sought to maintain the atmosphere and visual fidelity of Yom’s original work while expanding the narrative scope of the characters' workplace dynamics. Upon release, it was received as a faithful expansion of the source material, appealing largely to the existing fanbase that had followed the illustrations' development over the preceding years.
